Much of this information is very useful. Some caveats regarding two of the banks listed, based on recent (Feb '09) information I obtained directly from them.

To open an account at Scotiabank (Bank of Nova Scotia- one of the largest in the Caribbean) US residents must own property in Panama.

The minimum deposit to open an account at BNP Paribas, the large French bank, is $US 250,000.

Hi,
Great article, thanks a lot for sharing, it's pretty hard to find decent information like this online. I'll be travelling through Panama in a few weeks and I'm completeing the required documentation now. Since you say it's better to get reference letters in the bank's name, could you recommend a specific one? I heard Stanford is good. All I need is a check account with debit card and online access, preferably with no monthly fees... Also do you think just a few days in Panama city is sufficient? I mean is signing up for an account one meeting kinda thing, or do I have to be meeting with bank officials on a few occasions?

thanks in advance and cheers,
Michal Kriukow

This is so useful! I'm not planning to move to Panama, but have dealt with banking in another country, and wish I'd had the equivalent information then.
