The long awaited Panama rainy season is back. With cloud cover this morning the city is cooler than it has been. No big rainfall yet, but yesterday looked as if the dark skies were ready to open and pour. Most of us are grateful, this will give our gardens and wells relief. On Taboga Island rain is still holding off. The locals say there that rainy season is at least 2 weeks behind the mainland.
For those of my readers who don´t live here, Panama City and Taboga and the islands in the Perlas chain receive less rainfall than the rest of the country. There are other dry areas as well. Rainfall can be so localized that while driving through the city, one block gets rainfall and just down the street the next one is dry. Except for unusual days, rainfall doesn´t last long and usually kicks in in the afternoon. When it is really heavy sometimes the drains on the street back up and create small lakes. No problem when you have a trusty Toyota Corolla (it was explained to me by a friend that the alternator is on the top of the engine so I will have very few worries driving through the “water features” on the streets of Panama City)! So if you are planning to head for the beach or enjoy activity where you would rather be dry, plan for the morning and pack your umbrella.
